Casually draping in effortless class. ⚡️

A laid back yet sophisticated approach to overcoat styling.

Greetings Gentlemen,

As always, I hope this email finds each of you in good spirits. I’ll have you know, that one of my favorite things to do in life, is catering to the needs of the people. In fact, it’s exactly how this brand came about. And in response to our poll from our previous style notes, casual overcoat styling was the most popular request, and there’s honestly no surprise there…Haha!

Overcoats have been a menswear staple for ages, and if you’re looking to upgrade your style, it’s a smart idea to invest in at least one. Whether it’s a classic single or double-breasted coat, or a patterned car coat like this one, it’s difficult to screw up an outfit with either of these statement pieces, as they look great with just about everything.

But for this style note, my goal was to play with a few different principles, showcasing how can you sport your favorite coat on any occasion, without feeling too dressed up or too dressed down. Let’s start with under layers. You gents are already aware that you can layer a coat over just about anything, but adding a lightweight vest underneath and as a mid layer, is a style hack that most of us tend to not think of. This allows you to a.) Match your base layer accordingly for different temperatures (i.e. from a turtleneck sweater to a lightweight tee or henley) and b.) Peel off your overcoat layer without your outfit falling apart, like when arriving to the office or to a restaurant.

Overcoats blend seamlessly with denim of all colors. And for this outfit, I decided to style Jaime (5’9, 170 lbs, 38 chest) in lighter wash denim, for the sake of providing some beautiful contrast, to the rich tone of these Brown Suede Lug Sole Penny Loafers. It’s hard to miss with footwear pairing of loafers or boots. Since overcoats are known for conveying overwhelming amounts of sophistication, this style of loafer helps balance out the ensemble, by introducing additional bits of character and ruggedness to the outfit. It’s also a great time to play with different sock choices (you’ll be needing them to stay warm anyway). So consider complimentary colors like burgundy, mustard, and shades of blue and green, in solid or light patterns like this polka dot sock.

Having some sort of headgear option, to protect you from the sun, a sudden down pour of heavy or light rain, and maybe even snow, definitely isn’t a bad idea. Additionally, as I’ve stated on previous occasions, a beanie or ball cap is always a great way to add a subtle splash of color, to any casual outfit. And pairing the right ball cap with your overcoat, will definitely make it look a bit more youthful but not overly sporty, assuming of course you aren’t rocking sneakers. Should you decide to rock one, I typically recommend staying away from NBA and NFL team caps, and opting for a Vintage or Classic MLB cap or one that isn’t associated with a sports team for that matter. The goal is to stick to something that has a minimalist or simplistic logo, like this one I stumbled across from Axel Arigato.

And that’s pretty much it. Another classic SG template, for after hours or weekend style, that’ll work perfectly with any coat in your closet. Whether you’re mixing patterns and colors, or keeping things in the same color family with a monochromatic theme, the combination of different clothing articles and textures of these fabrics, will unfailingly come together for a timeless but striking seasonal outfit. Not to mention, Thanksgiving holiday is around the corner, and it’ll surely feel good making rounds in style, with friends and family.

As always, I hope this episode of SG Style Notes was right on time, and you enjoyed reading it as well. Please be sure to drop a vote per usual in the poll below to provide some feedback. Also to let us know what you’d like to see next! We only run out of ideas, if you run out of requests. 😉 Until next time Gents. ✌🏾
