Creating your 'own' custom Fedora. 🪶

What’s up Good People?

Today’s style note is a focus on headwear, and when it comes to fedoras, there’s no debating that custom hats are dope. They have quite a bit of character, and will certainly turn heads and get you noticed. On the contrary, a good one can run you upwards of $1,000. And if you’ve been longing to own something similar to torch the summer evenings and weekends with, the good news is that you can create your own. Now there’s a world of possibilities when it comes to hat customizations, but for the sake of simplicity, a unique piece of fabric, a long length feather, metal pin or match stick can do wonders when it comes to accessorizing your fedora.

But what exactly do I mean by unique fabric? Well…I’d have to say something out of the ordinary that speaks to your soul. A vintage print bandana at your local Americana shop is a great start, or better yet head to a local fabrics store to source something special. Distressed, patterned or frayed fabrics are all great ideas and add quite a bit of texture to the look.

You’ll want to shoot for a square cut fabric 23x23’ or 24x24’ depending on the size of your fedora and for a complete wrap around. Simply fold the fabric in half, and then fold over to a width of about 1.5’ to 2”, as I’ve done here with our Naked Fedora. As for feathers, a quick Google search for the term ‘Pheasant Feathers’ will bring up more than you bargained for. 

Now with regards to styling the rest of your outfit​, it’s back to lightweight wool trousers as I stated last week, to beat the summer heat. This time I went for a splash of color with the burgundy tone, and a boot cut tailoring style. The nice thing about headgear this bold, is that you really don’t need to do much with the rest of the outfit. A polo or a plain or simple graphic tee will do just fine. Look at how nice and polished a t-shirt can come across, when tucked in with a classy pair of boots. And I know…I know, we are long over due to restock the entire collection of our Damien Chelsea Boots, but I promise we are working on it and hope to have them back in stock for you later this fall. 

And that’s really it. Switching up your style by keeping things simple, and allowing your fedora to do the heavy lifting. And if you’re not a fedora wearer, no big deal. No hat, or a bold two toned trucker hat works splendid for this western style. I’ll be rocking something similar to a summer party this coming weekend, and there’s honestly nothing I love more…than being dressed up and dressed down at the same damn time.
