Varsity Blues 🐬• The Art of the Deejay.

Casual uniforms that never go out of style. ⚡️

Greetings Gents,

And ladies of course. It’s the start of a new calendar year, and we are very much in the thick of the winter season. As I’ve stated on previous occasions, dressing in accordance with the weather while looking your best for whatever work you do, is something every Gent should aim to master. This edition of SG Style Notes, shadows Rican McGusty, also known as DJ Big Reeks, a 20 year DJ veteran whose love for masterfully spinning vinyl records, has taken him to great heights. From Deejaying corporate events of fortune 500 companies like Google and Amazon, sporting events for the Houston Texans and Rockets, and celebrity parties for athletes such as Chris Paul and James Harden. When it comes to orchestrated sounds, Reeks is a master at his craft. But finding apparel that works seamlessly for his working environment can sometimes be a daunting task, especially with freezing temperatures.

“I’m always struggling to find what to wear to a lot of my DJ events. I like to be comfortable, but at the same time I prefer to stand out from the crowd. And how I show up, is indicative of how good of a time folks in attendance are going to have.” Reeks and I have been good friends for quite a while, so I’m well aware of his love for hooded sweatshirts. And to address his style conundrum, enclosing one of his favorite hoodies in a signature varsity jacket was a no brainer, since these items always look so good together. Especially when the hood strings are neatly tied.

The traditional and classic cut of a varsity jacket will forever stand the test of time, and it lends a vintage appeal that has its way of bringing sophistication to any outfit. For Rican, dark wash denim paired with a minimalist mid-top sneaker ,provides a solid foundation that’s perfectly fitting for almost any kind of casual event. As a fitness enthusiast, Rican’s go-to choice of accessory, usually include an Apple Watch Ultra, a Gold Prairie View A&M University Class ring, and distinctive tortoise readers.

When it comes to style that resonates with personal branding, I’m a stern believer that we Gents should strive to ‘create uniforms'. In other words, sets of clothing that are similar in nature, extremely versatile, and as a result, require little to no critical thinking. And perhaps the simplest way to do so, is to stick with classic cuts, monochromatic color schemes, or understated tones. “I think the transfer of energy is mind blowing honestly. When I like the way I look, I feel a lot more energized and I get even more excited to curate a nostalgic Deejay playlist. I guess it’s true what they say... When you look good, you feel good”.

Sincerely,

F. Lawson
