3 Gents + 3 Coats. ⚡️

Sophisticated Layering Simplified.

Greetings Beautiful People,

When the Gents are in town, creating sartorial magic 🪄 is definitely a must. With models and creators who live in different cities and states, it’s not too often we get the opportunity to work with a group of our friends all at the same time. But the stars were aligned this past week, and I couldn’t pass up on the chance to showcase professional layering for the season, with these classy gentlemen.

Overcoats are by far, my most favorite item to wear and style in the Fall + Winter season. Simply because it’s a timeless menswear staple that instantly commands respect, and always exudes class and sophistication. So for this business themed shoot, the goal was to display overcoat layering, but in a simple and understated manner. Let’s take a brief look at each individual outfit styling, play by play.

What's your go-to outerwear in the Fall + Winter?🍁

Starting off with the simplest of them all, I chose to go with a monochromatic olive pairing on Nivas, with a single-breasted suit and double breasted overcoat. For footwear I went with a pair of sleek black penny loafers. Keeping things in the same color family is always a great option. Especially for the moments where you’d like to avoid overthinking your outfit, yet still desire to keep things clean. And best of all, it allows your dress shirt and tie choice (which by the way should be kept simple as well) to remain the focal point. For this style of dress, a color matching or neutral tones in a turtleneck or crewneck sweater fits right in as well.

Next, we’ve got a medium-contrast styling illustrated with Queyoun’s attire, sporting a darker colored navy overcoat, and a double breasted grey suit. And finally, a pair of dark brown Chelsea boots and textured green tie to bring a little more color and life into the ensemble. When mixing your suiting and outerwear, a simple rule of thumb is to play with ‘boring’ aka safe garment colors, and lean into your accessories to spice things up. Think statement neckties, signature eyewear, gloves, and carrying accessories like a leather folio or briefcase.

Lastly, for a bold contrast we have the layering of a double breasted black overcoat, over a lighter colored suit as seen here with Troy’s ensemble. Black coats have their way of looking flawless, especially when paired with a brown, grey, tan or navy suit choice. It makes for a striking outfit that’s suitable for both business and semi formal occasions. Add the finishing touches to the trousers with boot cut tailoring to pair perfectly with sleek leather Chelseas. These are just a few simple touches you can implement to make your professional or casual outfits stand out even more.

And there you have it: three stylish gents, with 3 different ways to pull off an overcoat combination for business attire. Style doesn’t have to mean being flamboyant, or overthinking your garments. Especially as the weather cools down even more and as we’re left with no other options but to layer our clothing items.

Keeping things simple, but strategically outlining your color choices, will do wonders for your seasonal style. From monochromatic items to high contrast pairings, the opportunities are endless. So if you haven’t already started, get creative, have fun with your style, and put those overcoats to work. It’s one thing to be great at whatever it is that you do - which I’m certain you all are. But doing it in style? Now that’s even better! 🎯

Sincerely,

F. Lawson
