Casual Overcoat Styling. 🍁

My personal take on layering off the clock.

Southern Gents Duffle Coat in Commander Green

Greetings Gents,

In our Gentlemen’s coat post from earlier this week, I mentioned that an overcoat is my go to outerwear layer. So I figured, why not prove it to you. To truly demonstrate the versatility and practicality of the overcoat by laying out my ‘personal’ template when it comes to casual Fall & Winter styling. I have a few of these style templates depending on the occasion. The use case for this specific outfit is quite broad, and really encompasses everything in between formal business life. For example, casual office days, errand runs, happy hour or bar hangouts with friends 🍻… this outfit literally takes me anywhere. Thanks to the drape of the overcoat, something so simple, can quickly come off rather elevated….just the way I prefer it to be.

I typically start with basics as a foundation and building block to this outfit. That includes a pair of tailored cargos or dark wash denim, perfectly hemmed to about a half-break length. Recently I’ve been a fan of the straight leg cut of Levi’s 505 denim. Next, is a base layer of a light to medium weight tee or henley in a dark or neutral color. And finally for footwear a pair of vibram or lug sole boots, like this Emerson lug sole Chelsea in Matte Brown which we are currently working on producing for you guys.

Most importantly, I’d have to say the secret for making this look standout is a solid mid layer. I’ve gone with a denim vest for this photoset, simply because I love the texture and slight ruggedness it brings to the overall ensemble. And when it comes to layering, the less sleeves, the better, for all day comfort. You can find one online, or simply hack the sleeves off an old denim jacket with a pair of scissors, like I did. However, I also achieve this style with our quilted vests, cable knit tennis sweater vest, or doublebreasted suit vest. Think about it, as the equivalent of transforming your casual look into a 3pc suit . 👌🏾

Denim Trucker Vest

For the finishing touches, a complimenting or contrasting trucker hat ties things together perfectly, especially for those daily run arounds. In the instance of a night life event, I’ll switch this up with a short brim fedora, like the trilby or porkpie hat. Oh and you can’t forget your wrist and finger accessories to spice things up. Mix them up however you like, but remember…some is always better than none.

“If you get the limited-edition burgundy coat back, Ill be the first to buy it. hint hint.”

“Overcoat ”

“quilted and puffer vests are great for layering. bring back the mock turtleneck!”

“Overcoats can’t be dressed up or down but have the ability to keep you extra warm with the wool material or lining inside as well as suppose to other jackets or clothing.”

And that’s it. Just in case you were under the assumption, that overcoats were only fitting for formal wear, here’s just one of many ways to transform your favorite overcoats into a daily driver. Let me know if you’ve enjoyed this personal style insight in the poll below, and leave a suggestion on what layering styles or dress occasion you’d like to see next.
